Trophy Events, Futsal and Small-Sided Festivals all featured in the South Wiltshire Mini Soccer League's January events.
In a bid to offer varied playing opportunities, save grass pitches and keep the ball rolling during a wet January, the SWMSL held a mixture of central venue events over January. Utilising the 3G pitch and indoor hall at Sarum Academy School, the league organised a mixture of Trophy Events, Futsal and Small-Sided festivals for all of our U7s, U8s, U9s and u10s teams.
The Trophy Events were all held on the 3G in a mixture of round-robin or group stage formats and whilst it offered the players an opportunity to experience semi-competitive football, the focus remained on enjoyment and player development, with the short matches and quick turnarounds providing a different experience to development matches.
An exciting addition to the league this year was the introduction of Futsal, with our very own Futsal expert Stuart Garnett organising four fantastic events, giving many players their first taste of the small-sided indoor version of the game. The players (and coaches) appeared to thoroughly enjoy the experience, with a total of 33 teams across 9 clubs and hundreds of players playing a total of 75 games and and scoring 483 goals! Who doesn't love scoring goals?
Finally, back out on the 3G, 3v3 (U7s & U8s) and 4v4 (U9s & U10s) Festivals were held. With smaller pitches and smaller goals, the objective of these events was to provide players with another different format of the game. Small-sided matches are fantastic for player development and gave players more touches, greater game involvement per player and more 1v1 opportunities. Again, the events received great feedback from both players and coaches.
Thank you everyone for your enthusiasm with the events. This is something the league is looking to grow and develop next season. We are pleased that f
